There are currently no licensed liquid calcium supplements after the discontinuation of Calcium Sandoz.

There are two alternative preparations that can be used. Please note, in solution these calcium preparations will not work as a phosphate binder and must only be used for calcium supplementation.

Calvive 1000 tablets (each tablet contains 25 mmol or 1000 mg elemental calcium). Where doses are less than 25 mmol we recommend dispersing one tablet in 25 ml water to give a 1 mmol per 1 ml solution and giving an appropriate dose from this.

Calcium effervescent 500 mg tablets (each tablet contains 12.5 mmol or 500 mg elemental calcium). Where doses are less than 12.5 mmol we recommend dispersing one tablet in 12.5 ml water to give a 1 mmol per 1 ml solution and giving an appropriate dose from this.

More information about alternative preparations is available from Peter Foxon, Paediatric Renal Pharmacist at Nottingham Children's Hospital on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
