Nottingham Children's Hospital or the the wider EMEESY team have been involved in the following studies

:

PLUTO

This trial was testing a specific type of intravenous fluid (PlasmaLyte) used as the main fluid in children immediately after a kidney transplant.  It completed recruitment in 2022 and the results are awaited.

PREDNOS 2

This was a large UK multi-centre study in which many EMEESY centres took part.  It found that giving a daily low dose of prednisolone for 6 days to children with relapsing nephrotic syndrome at the time of an upper respiratory tract infection did not reduce the risk of them developing a relapse. 

The results have been published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics. 

HOTKID

This was a large multi-centre study testing investigating whether controlling blood pressure (in children with chronic kidney disease to a level lower than that currently recommended will help prevent damage to the heart and blood vessels later in life. Results suggested that heart muscle thickening in children with chronic kidney disease was related to blood pressure control and that a target blood pressure at the 50th percentile is optimal to prevent this.

The paper was published in 2023 in the Lancet Child and Adolescent Health. 

ECUSTEC

This was a multi-centre UK trial testing to see if the complement-blocking drug, eculizumab, which is effective in atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), is effective in diarrhoea-associated or STEC-HUS. Funding for the trial was withdrawn part-way through the trial because the numbers of cases of HUS reduced. 

Results are awaited.
