Neuropathic bladders

There is a specialist clinic for children with neuropathic bladders every month where children can see a urology surgeon, urology nurse and orthopaedic/spinal surgeon in the same clinic. 

The urology nurse specialists train children and their parents how to do intermittent catheterisation. 

All children with complex bladders are managed by a Consultant Paediatric Urologist. 

We offer training for children requiring clean intermittent catheterisation which we instigate from the age of 3 months. We then teach/support and adivse the child's school at the appropriate time on how to care and manage the child once at school age.

Children requiring reconstructive bladder surgery are given advice and support prior to admission in order that the child and parents can make an informed decision regarding their care together with ongoing support, advice and care following surgery.

Children requiring video urodynamics are offered support/advice and, if requested, play preparation prior to the investigation. We offer the child and family the investigation with the use of Entonox or to have a supra-pubic catheter inserted in theatre the day before. Again advice booklets and leaflets have been written to help reinforce the information given verbally.
