Specialists clinics take place regularly at Nottingham Children's Hospital for children with day and night-time wetting.

We take referrals from general and community paediatricians and from community continence practitioners.  Where referrals come from primary care, we ask that children have been seen first by a community continence practitioner or by our enuresis urology or nephrology consultants.

We see children with continence problems ranging from children with nocturnal enuresis to children with complex neuropathic bladders requiring intermittent catheterisation and bladder reconstructive surgery.

Over the years we have increasingly been involved with children who have chronic kidney disease and requiring transplantation, working with the child and family to ensure that they have a safe bladder before undergoing transplantation.

We are able to offer a variety of investigations including:

  • non-invasive bladder assessment
  • urine flow measurements
  • standard video urodynamics
  • EMG pelvic floor biofeedback
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) for overactive bladders

Children with daytime wetting

We accept referrals from all consultants within the hospital who have a child with daytime enuresis.

Nurse-led clinics are held on alternate Wednesday afternoons. Children are given 15 minutes consultation time, the nurse as the facility to carry out pre and post void ultrasound scans. This enables the nurse to make a clear diagnosis and plan a management programme.

For children requiring a more comprehensive investigation into their condition we are able to offer a 3 hour non-invasive bladder assessment, which involves scanning the child both pre and post void together with obtaining a urine flow measurement. This enables the nurse to plan a management programme that will suit each individual child and family.

Information booklets have been written by our team to reinforce the verbal advice given.  These are available in the patient information section.

Telephone supported is offered and children are seen in the clinic regularly until they have made significant improvements in their condition.

We are able to also carry out pelvic floor bio-feedback to our children with overactive pelvic floors and TENS treatment for overactive bladders.

Children with night-tme wetting

We accept referrals from all consultants within the hospital who have a child with night time enuresis.

The clinic is held on the 1st, 3rd and the 5th Wednesday of each month. Children are given 15-30 minute consultation time, as with the day time enuresis service the nurse as the facility to carry out pre- and post-void ultrasound scans. This enables the nurse to make a clear diagnosis and plan a management programme.

For children requiring a more comprehensive investigation into their condition we are able to offer a 3 hour non-invasive bladder assessment.  Click here for more information on bladder assessments

As per NICE guidelines we offer a choice of enuresis alarms together with practical advice.

If thought to be necessary we will organise for medications to be prescribed for the child.

Information booklets have been written by to reinforce the verbal advice given and are available in the patient information section.

Parents are given the teams direct line telephone number should they require further advice once home or before their next appointment. Regular telephone consultations we hope will reduce the need for the child and family to make regular visits to the hospital.

Children are seen in the clinic regularly until they have made significant improvements in their condition.
