Specialist clinics

We currently run several specialist clinics where children and their parents can see more than one specialist in the same clinic.

Renal endocrine clinic

For children who have both kidney and growth or hormone problems, we have a renal-endocrine clinic where children can see a kidney and growth/hormone specialist at the same time. 

The most common reasons to be seen in this clinic poor growth because of chronic kidney disease (when growth hormone might be effective) and delayed development because of chronic kidney disease, when hormone treatment might be helpful to kick-start the process of puberty. 

The clinic is run by Dr Martin Christian from nephrology and Dr James Law from endocrinology.  

It takes place in Children's Clinic South on a Friday afternoon four times per year.

Renal genetic clinic

When a new diagnosis of a genetic kidney disease is made or being considered, we try to arrange for children to be seen in this clinic.  In the clinic are Dr Andy Lunn (a consultant paediatric nephrologist) and Dr Abhijit Dixit (a consultant clinical geneticist). Sometimes a genetic counsellor also attends. 

Dr Dixit will explain either what a genetic test would involve or what the genetic diagnosis means both for the child and for the wider family. Dr Lunn can explain more of what would be expected of long-term outlook and treatment for that condition. 

Most children only need to be seen a single time in the renal genetic clinic but if a diagnosis is not yet made, a follow-up appointment will usually be made to discuss results. 

Renal oncology clinic

Sometimes the treatment for childhood cancers can cause long-term effects on the kidney.  This clinic, run by Dr JJ Kim from nephrology and Dr Sophie Wilne from oncology, is for children whose kidney function has been affected as part of their cancer late-effects follow-up. 

It takes place twice a year
