Renal nurses

We have a large team of specialist nurses who look after children with different types of kidney problems or receiving different types of treatment. 

There are specialist nurses for transplantation, chronic kidney disease, dialysis and nephrotic syndrome

Lead Nurses

Meet the Nottingham Team - Renal Nurses (Lead Nurses)

Shelley Jepson

Shelley Jepson joined the team in 1993 after training in paediatric renal nursing at Guy's Hospital in London.  

Shelley is the lead nurse for the EMEESY network and outreach services.

She is line manager to the CKD, transplant, nephrotic and urology nurses.

Roy Connell

Roy Connell joined the team in 2000 after training and working at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

Roy is the lead for acute and in-centre services. He is line manager to the haemodialysis, home haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and living donor nurses.

Roy is the chair of the UK Paediatric Nephrology Nurses' Group.

Shelley and Roy oversee all the specialist, haemodialysis and ward nurses for the children's kidney team as well as liaising with local nurses within the EMEESY Children's Kidney Network.

Transplant Nurses 

Michelle Kirkland

Michelle Kirkland has been a senior specialist nurse for transplantation since 2022.

Before this she was the manager of the children's kidney ward for many years. 

Abby Sanders

Abby Sanders is a junior sister for paediatric transplantation.

Before joining the specalist renal nurses' team in 2022, she specialised in paediatric intensive care. 

Kim, Michelle and Abby support children with kidney transplants and their families by seeing them in clinic as well as taking advice calls and liaising with local teams when interim reviews or blood tests are needed. 

Chronic Kidney Disease Nurses 

Kate Baker

Kate Baker joined the specialist renal nursing team in 2003.  She is the lead nurse for children with chronic kidney disease.

Hannah Sneath

Hannah Sneath joined the team in 2026 as specialist nurse for children with chronic kidney disease to work alongside Kate. 

Together Kate & Hannah are responsible for looking after children with all stages of CKD and supporting them, and their families, through the CKD journey up until the point of starting dialysis or having a transplant.

They help children and families prepare for transplanation, or dialysis if needed, and will see you in Nottingham clinics, regional clinics and home and school visits where needed.

Peritoneal Dialysis Nurses 

Kerry-Ann Bullock

Kerry-Ann Bullock joined as a specialist nurse in peritoneal dialysis in 2022 after working as a staff nurse then junior sister on the children's renal ward. 

Molly McLaughlin

Molly McLaughlin joined in peritoneal dialysis in September 2025 after working as a specialised nurse in PICU. 

Together, Cat and Kerry-Ann support the children who have PD at home.  They are responsible for training parents of children who start on PD and for overseeing all aspects of care at home, including ordering PD fluids and giving advice to parents by phone. 

Nephrotic Nurses 

Monique Burgin

Monique Burgin joined the specialist nursing team in 2013. She is the lead nurse for nephrotic syndomre and aHUS. She has a keen interest within environmental healthcare and exploring sustainable practices.

Justine Nicolson

Justine Nicolson joined the specialist nursing team in 2022, working alongside Monique as a nephrotic nurse specialist. She also brings a wealth of experience as a forms health visitor and is a strong advocate for the patent's voice.

Nephrotic syndrome is a rare relapsing condition. Monique and Justine provide education and support to families and young adults, to help manage relapses safely and as close to home as possible.
