The Kinder Fund was established to fund four main areas:
  1. Information, care and support for families of children with renal disease.  We have produced a large range of high-quality booklets forparents and children with financial support from Kinder)
  2. Psychosocial support for children and their families.  We have provided specialised babysitting for children on dialysis, staffed by nurses from the unit.  Kinder also supports therapeutic residential holidays for children with kidney disease, especially those moving towards transitioning care to an adult kidney unit.
  3. Training for staff involved in caring for children with renal disease.
  4. Research in the causes and treatment of children with renal disease.
There is a heavy burden of care on the families of a child with chronic kidney disease.  Since it is not common, the needs of families with a child who has chronic kidney disease are not well appreciated by others.  The variety of needs of these families can include:
  • having to put a child on dialysis every night
  • regular clinic visits to the hospital
  • a high risk of becoming unwell with dialysis catheter infections
  • unpredictable admissions to hospital and the need then to make childcare arrangements for siblings
  • a large number of medicines to take each day
  • special dietary restrictions and/or the need for specialised feeds that need to be given through a gastrostomy tube
Much of the work of Kinder directly or indirectly is about supporting parents to have as normal family functioning as possible and we value your support in that!

The unit has been at the forefront of research and participates in international studies to define the best transplant immunosuppressive drugs as well as registries informing us about the changing nature and outcomes for children with chronic renal failure.

The Kinder Fund comes under the umbrella of the Nottingham University Hospitals Charity and the charity number is 1165397.

Patients and their parents have done all sorts of creative fundraising events from sponsored events to Golf Days to making and selling biscuits.  We are grateful for all these fundraising efforts and all the money that is raised from them.  We are delighted to have been chosen as the kit sponsor for Netherfield Albion Football Club and look forward to many more fundraising football matches against them.

We would love to make 2025 even better in terms of fun had and money raised.  Read about forthcoming fundraising events here.  If you are planning a fundraising event for the Kinder Appeal, do let us know and we will publicise it here and on our Instagram page.

Please do send us any photos of your fundraising and we will put a gallery of photos here.
