Critical care resources

MollyI'm Molly McLaughlin, Renal Critical Care Educator for EMEESY. I provide specialist nursing support and education for staff caring for children with acute kidney injury (AKI) within the regional PICUs. This includes Nottingham, Sheffield, Leicester Glenfield and Leicester Royal Infirmary. I also provide some support to Addenbrookes but this is more as an in-reach rather than out-reach service at present.

Renal critical care education focuses mainly around continuous renal replacement therapies (CRRT). There are increasing numbers of children with AKI requiring CRRT within PICU’s, however the frequency and predictability of these treatments remains very varied. This means the experience of PICU staff and their subsequent confidence in delivering such specialised treatments can vary greatly.

Renal critical care education and support therefore aims to increase exposure to such treatments, improving the knowledge and practical skills of PICU nursing staff through simulation, ad hoc bedside teaching, formal classroom teaching or study days and supervised practice when a patient is undergoing treatment.

There is an e-learning resource on CVVH available here.
